28-Days of Self-Love (Day 22 Walk through Emotional Pain)

“If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk.”  -Raymond Inmon

There are many ways to meditate and one of my favorite ways is to walk in nature. When I walk intentionally I leave my music headset at home. The most precious insights I have discovered about my life and relationships have come from walking in nature alone or with my dog.

Once many many years ago something dreadful happened in my life and I felt pain down to my very soul. I was in so much emotional pain I could hardly breathe.

I remember being home alone and spiraling down, down, down. I felt if I hit the bottom of the metaphorical well there would be no way back up. That was a pivotal spiritual moment for me…I had a choice. I could wallow in my self-pity or move my feet. Somehow instinctively I knew that I had to get outside and walk!

I picked up a jacket, put on my sneakers and whistled for my dog Sadie. She was my soul companion and that day we walked for miles. We walked with no destination in mind…we walked and walked mile after mile. I do not know how far we went, but I remember clearly that when we finally returned home, I was different. My perspective of what had happened shifted. I literally walked to save my life that day!

It took a few months to work through all the details of that time, but I never spiraled down like that again. It was after that day that I came to realize how walking alone in nature was a true meditation for me. To this day, whenever I am not sure about something, I walk, and I always come home with some sort of insight.

Part of self-love is to know how to make choices that support and empower you on life’s journey.

28-Days of Self-Love (Day 21 Retreat at Home)

“You are the most important part of the family. Take care of yourself first. Then you’ll be able to take care of everyone else even better.”  — Deepak Chopra

Take a day off! Yes you, take a day off and go on a self-retreat. Do not wait until you can go to a special class or retreat center, do that too when you are able, but for now create your own retreat at home. Imagine spending a whole day or even a half day as if you were at the most luxurious spa in the world. You will emerge refreshed, energized and ready to be the best you that you can be!

Five Easy Steps to Retreat at Home:

  1. Hire a sitter or send the kids to grandmas. She probably wants to see the kids anyway. Send hubby too…you need to be alone!
  2. Collect all you will need for your special day. (Gather scented candles, soft music, bubble bath, journal, essential oils, and loads of pillows to create a nice nest. Gather whatever you need to make your day restful and filled with delight. How about that special novel you have wanted to read all year?)
  3. Give yourself full permission to take this time for you. (You may want to write up a contact saying that you are committed to taking care of yourself and you give yourself full permission to retreat. Sign it and hang it on the refrigerator as a reminder if you stray off course.)
  4. Decide when your retreat will start and when it will end. Give yourself a timeline and put the time in your self-contract. (This way you will not be tempted to throw in a load of laundry or do a quick stack of dishes…you are fully on retreat.)
  5. RETREAT NOW! Listen to the stillness. Hear yourself breathe in and out as you begin to discover YOU! (For the time allotted do whatever fills you up. Read, rest, write, draw, sleep, and soak in the bathtub or skinny dip in the neighbor’s pool…only kidding, unless they are not home. Chuckle…but you get the idea; let your imagination decide how your retreat will be. ONLY ONE RULE…NO ELECTRONICS!! PERIOD!…No phone, TV, iPad or computer. BE ON RETREAT AND ENJOY!!!!

Being on retreat is one of the best ways to foster self-love. And it is so delightful!

“Our soul is like a soft and gentle flower, it needs to be nurtured, cared for, tended to, with sufficient sunlight, fresh air and freedom to bloom into its most precious and beautiful form. This, my friend, is self-love.” ~ Miya Yamanouchi

28-Days of Self-Love (Day 20 Higher Vibration)

“Thoughts are mental energy; they’re the currency that you have to attract what you desire. You must learn to stop spending that currency on thoughts you don’t want.” — Wayne Dyer

When you are feeling down and not sure how to access your self-love simply reach for your next best thought. “Reach for a higher vibration.” says, Ester Hicks from her book Ask and it is Given, learning to manifest your desires. One thing I understood from Ester and Jerry Hicks teaching is if you do not feel happy, wonderful and on top of the world today, it is OK. Just reach a little higher from where you are.

No one needs to go from zero to hundred overnight. Whatever stage you find yourself in emotionally reach for the next vibration or next best thought…Example: if you are feeling frustration reach for optimism or if you have made it up to boredom reach for eagerness. Love is on the highest vibrational scale and a place we would like to be at always, but we all know how life sometimes gets in the way. Our best recourse is to keep on reaching, until you can stay in the vibration of love longer and longer, regardless what is happening around you.

You can learn more about the vibration scale from readings of Ester Hicks or you can just keep reaching for your next best thought. Ask yourself, “What thought would feel better than the thought I am having right now? What thought would bring me closer to love? What thoughts are pulling me out of love for myself and others?” By asking these questions on a regular basis you are reaching for self-love and your next best thought!

28-Days of Self-Love (Day 19 Forgive Self)

“Love yourself—accept yourself—forgive yourself—and be good to yourself, because without you the rest of us are without a source of many wonderful things.” -Leo F. Buscaglia

We know forgiveness sets you free. We are true forgivers. Many times we have forgiven our loved ones for their miss-guided deeds or the painful hurts they have caused. We hold our heads high and say. “I forgive you!”

Yet, we do not forgive ourselves. It is not for a lack of knowing how, after all we have forgiven everyone else. We open our hearts, we send them love and we truly let go of old resentments. It is what we have been told is the “right” thing to do. We set our pride aside and start over because they deserve another chase. Why? Because we love them and we want them to be happy. We want to feel good when we are around them and that is hard to accomplish when tension is between us. So the understanding to forgive becomes a no brainer.

Then why is it so dog gone hard to give ourselves ‘the grace of forgiveness’. We go about beating ourselves up for both big and small mistakes we have made. After all we should have known better and done better. Shouldn’t we have? Accepting ourselves for who we are and understanding that we did the best we could with what we had at the time is so important.

If you want to practice self-love you need to start with forgiveness of self so you can feel good being around YOU!

28-Days of Self-Love (Day 18 Heart Whispers)

“To love yourself, truly love yourself, is to finally discover the essence of personal courage, self-respect, integrity, and self-esteem. These are the qualities of grace that come directly from a soul with stamina.”  —- Caroline Myss

It takes a great deal of courage to dive into your interior world where self-love lives. When you really want to know yourself fully, you need to not only ask yourself questions, but listen when the answers are simply whispers from the heart.

Your heart wants to talk with you. Are you ready to listen?  Insights gained from quiet Journaling can be life changing.

The journey into self-love can sometimes be a slow one. Be patient and kind with yourself.

Journaling Questions:

  • When I exercise my courage muscle what do I know I need to change?
  • How can I to be delighted and fulfilled each day by being my most authentic self?
  • What do I most need in order to give myself peace of mind?
  • What mental, emotional or spiritual changes do I need to make in order to fully respect myself?
  • Who do I need to ask to ‘please’ treat me better?
  • What is the one step I can take starting today to move more fully into self-love?

“If your mother did not know how to love herself, or your father did not know how to love himself, then it would be impossible for them to teach you to love yourself. They were doing the best they could with what they had been taught as children.” — Louise L. Hay

28-Days of Self-Love (Day 16 Imagine)

“I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.” ― Oriah Mountain Dreamer

Your precious self needs you; it needs you to delight in all that is you. So many women do not see their value. They do not understand what is precious about them. Every woman is valuable and every woman is very precious! Once this is understood, truly understood, by every woman on this planet, the very energy of the world could shift.

In the world today it is estimated that there are over 3.5 billion women. Imagine what could shift if each one sent waves of self-love out into the world. What if, by loving themselves, they were able to heal the world in a way we have never seen before! IMAGINE!

If, as a woman, you understood how very important it was to honor, to value and to love yourself, would you try a little harder or reach a little higher for self-love? I believe you would!!
